America 1970s/80s: Hofer, Metzner, Meyerowitz, Newton

He was a grand master of photography: elegant, playful, provocative, and inspiring. This year, Helmut Newton would have been 100 years old. Many associate him with Paris and his work for Vogue. But the Berlin Museum f�r Fotografie is now showcasing his American side, the style-defining nudes and fashion shots taken at pools in Hollywood and Los Angeles, in Miami or New York in the 1970s. At the same time, the exhibition shows how glamorous the “American” Newton was: Starting in the 1980s, he and his wife June spent the winter at the legendary Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. There, Newton was often portrayed stars and creative people for magazines such as Ego�ste, Interview, Vanity Fair, and New Yorker.

Newton was fascinated by this era of freedom and hedonism. All of the photographers featured in the exhibition America 1970s/80s are characterized by a certain coolness. An example is Joel Meyerowitz, who photographed his girlfriends and the liberal, intellectual East Coast world in Provincetown and recently published a selection of this portrait series in a book. Or Sheila Metzner, a close friend of the Newtons who revives the coolness of New Objectivity in her work, and Evelyn Hofer, a legend of street photography. Accompanying the event, under the motto Open 24/7, there are a wealth of digital offerings for all of Berlin’s national museums, with blogs and the series Alone in the Museum, in which the curators of the museums personally guide visitors through the exhibitions.
