Commitment to Australia’s Most Important Contemporary Art Fair - Deutsche Bank and Sydney Contemporary Announce New Partnership

Sydney Contemporary was established in 2013 and quickly became Australia’s most important contemporary art fair. In 2015, 90 galleries from 14 countries came to the spacious halls of the Carriageworks. In a place where train carriages were once produced, today ambitious exhibitions and performances, as well as dance and theater events, are staged. It is also a venue for the Deutsche Bank-sponsored Biennale of Sydney, and many galleries are located nearby. The historic brick halls are the ideal location for the biannual Sydney Contemporary, which drew more 30,000 visitors in 2015. In addition, the fair initiated Sydney Art week on the occasion of its second edition. Apart from numerous exhibitions, actions and performances in public spaces were on the agenda. The fair and the Art Week underscore Sydney’s reputation as one of the most important metropolis for contemporary art in Australia as well as the Pacific Rim region.

The tremendous success of Sydney Contemporary persuaded Deutsche Bank, which now cooperates with the fair as its Principal Partner. James Roth, Deutsche Bank’s Co-Head of Corporate Finance Australia and member of the Biennale of Sydney’s Board of Directors, said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Sydney Contemporary. This partnership is a reflection of both our long-standing commitment to contemporary art in Australia and our endorsement of the Sydney Contemporary’s success as Australia’s largest and most diverse gathering of local and international galleries. We are incredibly proud of our commitment to contemporary art and consider it an important part of our cultural fabric. This new collaboration is in line with the Bank’s sponsorship of other leading art fairs around the globe, including the Frieze Art Fair and Frieze Masters in London as well as Frieze New York.”

In Sydney, Deutsche Bank has also cooperated for many years with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), which is devoted exclusively to mediation of contemporary art. As the first Education Partner, the Bank is the main sponsor of the children’s and youth program.

The third edition of Sydney Contemporary takes place in the Carriageworks from September 7 to 10, 2017.
