Łukasz Jastrubczak is this year’s winner of the Views Prize for Young Polish Art.
The award, which is endowed with 15,000 euros, is the most important
art prize in Poland. In his work, Jastrubczak sets out on the trail of
cinema and progressive 20th-century art. It is inspired by the Russian
avant-garde, Bauhaus, and Fluxus as well as Arthouse movies and the New Wave.
He combines these elements into works that reflect the 21st-century
attitude toward life. Jastrubczak’s Films and performances deconstruct
the legacy of Modernism with reduced means. Geometric shapes as well as
improvised and fleeting actions often play a central role.
The Views jury, chaired by the art historian and curator Anda Rottenberg,
praised Jastrubczak for his “daring experimentation, sensitivity, and
ability to work with transpositions of perception.” The three-month
residency at the Villa Romana goes to Karolina Breguła.
In her most recent works, the filmmaker and multimedia artist, who has
also organized campaigns against intolerance, investigates how art is
perceived and what role it can play in society.
"Views" was jointly initiated by the Deutsche Bank Stiftung, Deutsche Bank Polska, and the Zachęta National Gallery
in Warsaw in 2003. The goal of the distinction, which is awarded
biannually, is to promote young artists and strengthen the artistic
infrastructure in Poland. The exhibition in the Zachęta, coupled with
the prize, presents a panorama of the current Polish art scene and
offers young artists a high-profile platform. In addition, "Views"
helps draw more attention to the contemporary Polish scene.
