Imran Qureshi’s artistic career began at the National College of Arts
(NCA) in Lahore. He studied miniature painting at the NCA, and now he
teaches there himself. Recently, Pakistan’s most important art
institution held a big celebration to honor Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year”
2013. Prof. Dr. Shabnam Khan, principle at National College of Arts,
introduced the artist. Faizan Mitha, Chief Country Officer of Deutsche
Bank in Pakistan, the German ambassador Dr. Cyrill Nunn, and Amna Naqvi
of the Hong Kong Gandhara Art
gallery also paid tribute to Qureshi in speeches. Christofer Habig,
Global Head of Group Brand Communications & Corporate Citizenship,
and Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art sent video greetings to Lahore
from Frankfurt.
The artist himself said: “The award means
a lot to me. It's about a whole program which is not only
beneficial for the artist but is also a great opportunity for people
all over the world to know about that artist through this
exhibition. Apart from this, this is good news from Pakistan for
Pakistani people and the artistic community which will project a
positive image of the country to the outer world and that is the most
important thing for me." Qureshi was also present at the NCA with his
art. At the Zahoor ul Akhlaque Gallery, guests could watch as the
“Artist of the Year” created a temporary installation. Naturally, his
students couldn’t refrain from celebrating the distinction too. In the
sculpture garden, they put on a performance in honor of their teacher.
Starting in April, Qureshi’s first comprehensive exhibition in Europe will be on view at the "Deutsche Bank KunstHalle"
in Berlin. This show will mark the beginning of the program at the
exhibition hall on Unter den Linden. In the summer, the “Artist of the
Year” will realize an installation on the roof terrace of New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Additionally, work by Qureshi will also be shown at this year’s Venice Biennale.
