The German photographer Juergen Teller became famous for his provocative, emphatically unglamorous fashion shoots with Kate Moss and Kirsten McMenamy. He put Victoria Beckham in a shopping bag for a Marc Jacobs campaign. Charlotte Rampling posed naked for him in the Louvre. But Teller is much more than “just” a fashion photographer. This is shown by his photo project
on Nuremberg. Teller was born in the town of Bubenrath, near the city
were the Nazis held their party rallies. The artist’s Helmut Lang Backstage Series (1993–2000) has been on display at the Museum für Moderne Künste (MMK) in Frankfurt since 2010.
With Juergen Teller the museum’s MMK Talks
begin on October 5. The motto this time is “The Artists.” While last
year the focus was on the role of the museum in the 21st century, this
year artists whose works are on view at the MMK will talk. In the event
series, which is again being sponsored by the Deutsche Bank Stiftung,
they will discuss with a person of their choice their work, their view
of museums, and their collaboration with curators. Teller will talk
with Charlotte Roche, who is even more provocative than Teller himself. The moderator and author of the controversial bestsellers Feuchtgebiete (Engish: Wetlands) and Schoßgebete is know for her at once intelligent and irreverent interviews.
The other five MMK Talks also boast prominent discussion partners. Hans-Peter Feldmann will talk with the curator and co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Katharina Fritsch will talk with Julian Heynen, the artistic director of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen in Dusseldorf. Thomas Scheibitz, to whom the MMK is currently devoting an excellent solo exhibition, will talk with art historian Beate Söntgen. Andreas Slominski, who is represented with numerous important works at the MMK and is a “floor artist” in the Deutsche Bank Towers, will hold a discussion with Mario Kramer, the head of the museum’s collection. The last talk in the series will feature Carsten Höller and Daniel Birnbaum, the director of the Moderna Museet Stockholm who was the rector of the Städelschule in Frankfurt until 2010.
Admission is free for all of the events. The talks will be held in German.
