A car pulling a mobile home behind it drives by at a snail’s pace over Frankfurt’s Roßmarkt, a square in the middle of the city center. Two funnel-like loudspeakers are inserted in the mobile home’s outside walls, projecting the constant sound of a ticking clock. Each hour, the ticking sound is replaced by a short composition. Passers-by observe the mobile sound and time machine, a combination of the everyday and strangely surreal. It will circle around the Roßmarkt all winter, counting seconds, hours, days.
The work OUTSIDE HERE was conceived by Tamara Grcic, who is represented with numerous photographic works in the Deutsche Bank Collection. In her work, the Frankfurt-based artist investigates the phenomena of time and transience. Her new sound installation was made in the context of the pioneering project ROSSMARKT3. Each year, a temporary sculptural work is created in direct response to the square; the idea is to resensitize Frankfurt’s citizens to the location, which is rich in tradition but lacking in identity. At the same time, it’s about letting youths have a part in the decision by becoming commissioners of a public work—because it’s not a jury of experts that decides who should realize a work, but rather 25 seniors from Frankfurt’s high schools. Together, the students do preliminary research in interdisciplinary workshops on the location the art work is destined for, delving into its historical, urban planning, sociological, and aesthetic aspects. They then formulate the commission for the artist of their choice. After ROSSMARKT3 was initiated in 2010 with Tomas Saraceno’s sculpture Cloud City/Air-Port-City, this year’s choice was Tamara Grcic. Her ticking mobile home will be traveling around the Roßmarkt through April 2012.
