Black silhouettes move about in an imaginary cityscape, accompanied by the mystical sounds of a bamboo flute. In Thomas Neumann's Installation, Geister – Ghosts, photography, video, and music are combined to poetically examine the phenomenon of the Japanese mega-city. The master student of Thomas Ruff sets the technologically shaped present in relation to traditional Japanese culture, with its expressive forms of theater, shadow play, and music. The work of the Düsseldorf-based photo and media artist has now been awarded the Bergische Kunstpreis 2010. The prize endowed with 3,500 euros is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.
The jury selected Thomas Neumann from a shortlist of fourteen artists, who are all presented within the frame of the 64th Bergische Kunstausstellung at the Kunstmuseum Baden. This show of the Solingen exhibition venue presents works by artists rooted in the region, including graduates of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The project's aim is to offer the most innovative and interesting positions a platform to show their artworks to a wide audience. Works of Thomas Neumann, who was born in Cottbus in 1975, have already been included in the Deutsche Bank Collection since 2004. Upon the recommendation of Thomas Ruff, he participated in an exhibition that the bank had organized at the time in cooperation with the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Already in this early phase of his career, Neumann was convincing with his very own pictorial interlacing of tradition and the present day, of reality and fiction.
