At the beginning of March, the very first buses of the Collection Tours will start up in the context of European Cultural Capital's RUHR.2010. This innovative educational project involving the 20 RuhrKunstMuseen is made possible by Deutsche Bank. More than 20,000 children and youths from the Ruhr Valley as well as several thousand adults will be able to experience art of the 20th and 21st centuries in the participating museums.
A fleet of specially designed buses brings visitors to the RuhrKunstMuseen, whose exceptional collections provide important impulses for the cultural life of the Ruhr Valley. The idea of the Collection Tours is based on the overwhelming public response to the Cologne art initiative Wallraf the Museum Bus, which picks up school classes and already prepares them for art during the trip to Wallraf Richartz Museum. The Deutsche Bank Foundation was awarded the German Kulturförderpreis for the action, which was initiated in collaboration with the museum.
Under the motto Twice Art and Back, the Collection Tours invites schoolchildren of the Ruhr Valley to explore the museum of their hometown as well as another one of the museums of the RuhrKunstMuseen. The trips, museum visits, and events are free for kids and youths. The East/West Tour on Saturdays is for adults; 12 different routes take participants to various different museums. The Night Ride to Light Art, for instance, makes a stopover at Situation Kunst in Bochum, at the Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst Unna, and at the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten in Marl. The Travel Conversations refer to the exhibition project Mapping the Region; the excursions are accompanied by a guide and a further expert. Various themes are the focus of these trips: the first tour, City, Country, Canal, explores landscape design.
