When autumn begins in Europe spring starts in Australia, and art enthusiasts wait with baited breath for the list of artists taking part in the next PRIMAVERA. The exhibition, which is being sponsored by Deutsche Bank again this year, shows works by interesting Australian artists up to the age of 35. In the 18th edition of the show, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney is presenting nine artists. Curator Jeff Khan primarily chose experimental positions. This comes as no surprise, for in his position as director of the Next Wave Festival he seeks artists who cross genre boundaries. The PRIMAVERA participants also work interdisciplinarily. Thus, for example, in his project Oom Andy Best combines painting, photography and installation into a total work of art laced with innuendo with his own website providing information about the latest developments. On the other hand, the artist duo spat+loggie specializes in interventions in public space, while Michaela Gleave deals in her installations with sensory perception of everyday natural phenomena such as fog, light and ice. A stroll through Jeff Khan’s PRIMAVERA 2009 demonstrates just how exciting and varied the young art scene is Down Under.
