MACHT KUNST! city video future
Deutsche Bank and UFA Initiate Video Art Competition

The MACHT KUNST! success story continues: city video future is the title of the third installment of the competition, which Deutsche Bank is presenting with UFA this time. The occasion for the action is the 100th anniversary of UFA, Germany’s most important film production company. The two partners can look back on a long history. In 1925, Deutsche Bank helped finance Fritz Lang’s legendary masterpiece Metropolis. Taking this science-fiction classic as a point of departure, “MACHT KUNST! city video future” is looking for artistic short films devoted to the theme of My city in 100 years. The videos have to develop a futurist vision of their city or explore the metropolis of the future. The films can have a duration ranging from 100 seconds to a maximum of 10 minutes and can be submitted until midnight of June 30, 2017, via the website www.machtkunst-berlin.de.

An expert jury will choose the prizewinners. In addition to Josephine Ackerman, Deputy Global Head Art, Culture & Sports Deutsche Bank, and Wolf Bauer, Co-CEO UFA GmbH, Maike Mia Höhne (curator of the short film competition of the Berlinale) and the artist Basim Magdy (Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year” 2016) will nominate 20 films to be included in a shortlist and to receive three awards. Within the framework of the 20th Long Night of Museums, the 20 submissions will be on view August 19 and 20 in the atrium of Deutsche Bank (Charlottenstraße 37, 10117 Berlin). The jury will select the three winners from the shortlist. The first prize is endowed with 7,000 euros and a one-year mentorship with a renowned UFA producer, the second with 5,000 euros, and the third with 3,000. In addition, the audience has the possibility to select its favorite film from the shortlist at the location on August 19-20, 2017 (by ballot) or online from August 21 to 27. The winner of the audience prize will receive a high-quality camera. The participants whose works are shortlisted will be invited to the exhibition and awards ceremony in Berlin. The jury prizes will be announced on August 19, 2017, at 7 p.m. in the atrium of Deutsche Bank (Charlottenstraße 37, 10117 Berlin) during the exhibition opening. The audience prize will be announced online on August 28, 2017 (7 pm).

With its MACHT KUNST! initiative Deutsche Bank has thrilled Berlin audiences. The Berliner Tagesspiegel newspaper characterized the first Macht Kunst! action as “a coup.” “Inside crowds of people, outside a line that even at night was so long it seemed as though a long-lost early work by Picasso was being shown.” Deutsche Bank had invited all artists and art enthusiasts in the German capital to present one of their works in the then new KunstHalle. The action was a tremendous success. To be able to show all 2,135 of the works submitted, Deutsche Bank organized two 24-hour exhibitions that drew more than 12,000 visitors. An expert jury selected three artists from each of the exhibitions, who were presented in the KunstHalle’s studio in two-week solo exhibitions.

The second installment followed in 2015, the competition  “MACHT KUNST! A Sculpture for Berlin.” 1,500 visitors came to the atrium of Deutsche Bank to view the more than 400 works submitted. The winner was a design by Dirk Bell, which was later realized. As an artistic landmark, his steel sculpture 2FREE SPACE has stood since November 24, 2016, in front of Deutsche Bank’s new office complex on Otto-Suhr-Allee in Berlin.
