Focus on Africa
Deutsche Bank Foundation Sponsors MMK Talks

In a large-scale exhibition entitled The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Hell, Purgatory Revisited by Contemporary African Artists, the MMK in Frankfurt is presenting some of the most exciting artistic positions in Africa. If you want to learn more about African art, the fourth edition of the MMK Talks is a must. Within the framework of the event, which is again being sponsored by the Deutsche Bank Stiftung, three outstanding artists will discuss the show with a partner of their choice. All three – Wangechi Mutu, Kader Attia, and Julie Mehretu – have works in the Deutsche Bank Collection.

In the first talk, Bisi Silva, the founder of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos (Nigeria), talks with Wangechi Mutu, the “Artist of the Year” 2010. Mutu will address various topics, including violence, beauty, and consumption. Her retrospective A Fantastic Journey is currently touring the U.S. Kader Attia’s work investigates the influence of Western culture and politics on the Middle East and North Africa. In the MMK, he will talk with Koyo Kouoh, the founder of the Raw Material Company, a center for contemporary art and education in Dakar (Senegal). To close the series, the South African art journalist Sean O’Toole, who recently reported for ArtMag on the Johannesburg art scene, chats with Julie Mehretu. Her cartographic-like paintings show urban landscapes that have been affected by current political events. In 2009, she realized the commissioned work Grey Area for the Deutsche Guggenheim, which today is the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle.

The next round of talks will take place this autumn and will include Andrea Büttner and Dayanita Singh. The MMK is devoting a large-scale exhibition to the Indian photo artist, to whom an entire floor of the Deutsche Bank Towers is dedicated.
