Konrad Smolenski wins the most important prize for young Polish art

Konrad Smolenski is this year's winner of the Views Prize for Young Polish Art. The 15,000-Euro award is considered to be Poland's most important art prize. Konrad Smolenski works with video, installation, and performance. At the same time, the 1977-born artist plays with various bands and his project Pinkpunk in the experimental music scene. In their explanation, the international jury stressed the "subtle relationships Smolenski constructs between object, sound, and art" as well as the "sensitivity he brings to bear in his incorporation of sound in his videos." The three-month residency at the Villa Romana went to Honza Zamojski for his new and fresh forms of artistic investigation into the idiom of formalism.

Views was initiated jointly by the Deutsche Bank Foundation, Deutsche Bank Polska, and the Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw in 2003. The goal of the prize, which is awarded every two years, is to support young artists and to strengthen the artistic infrastructure in Poland. The exhibition at the Zacheta accompanying the prize presents a panorama of the current Polish scene and provides young artists with a publicity platform. In addition, "Views" helps to attract more international attention to the contemporary Polish scene. In 2006, Deutsche Bank received the Patron of Culture award in 2006 from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for its commitment to Polish art.
