Yukako Ando Is Awarded Deutsche Bank's
Bergischer Kunstpreis

The calm before the storm? Two figures wrapped in blankets lie opposite one another on the floor. Each is armed with a cue stick. The two sticks point like lances towards a raw egg. The elements in Yukako Ando's installation Dialog (2010) form a fragile symmetry-one that could end abruptly just moments later should the boundaries between game and battle fall and the two supine figures attack one other with their pool cues. Yukako Ando has now been awarded Deutsche Bank's Bergischer Kunstpreis for her work, which is both simple and possesses depth. The prize of 3,500 Euros will be awarded at the opening of the 65th Bergische Kunstausstellung on June 24, 2011 in the Kunstmuseum in Solingen.

Each year, the exhibition presents works by young artists from Bergisches Land. Many of the participants are graduates of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and are already known through national exhibitions. In showing the approximately 15 artists selected by a specialized jury, the show's goal is to provide a focused overview of exceptional young artistic talent today. This has made the Bergische Kunstausstellung one of the most interesting platforms for young work over the past several years, and its influence spreads far beyond the immediate region.
